MAYAN RIVIERA - Things to do in Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Mayan Ruins & Peninsula

Chichen Itza $99 pp Probably the best known Mayan archeological site. The majestic city of Chichen Itza awaits you; capitol of the ancient Maya, civilization archeologists consider one of the most advanced in the Americas. This mysterious city was an important ceremonial center. Founded in 445 BC and inhabited until 1204 AD, it was mysteriously abandoned. The city is divided into two areas; Old Chichen, built between 600 and 900 BC and New Chichen constructed in the 10th century after the arrival of the Putune people from what is now Campeche state. The largest and most important structure is (75 feet high) the Castle, the stairs of which end in two large serpents heads. During the equinox (21 March and September), the sun casts shadows on the steps that create the effect of a snake wriggling down the face of the pyramid. There is also The Temple of the Warriors, integrated into the temple of Chac Mool (a reclining man) built next to a group of pillars; each engraved with representations of priests and warriors. Other important buildings include: the Ceremonial Ball courts, the Observatory, the Sacred Well (cenote Sagrado) were archeologists have found ceramic offerings, and objects made of precious stones and metals. Transport: A/C 36 seat bus and rest room on board with tables. This tour will last approximately 11 hours. Meals: Buffet lunch (at a restaurant), soft drinks and beer aboard the bus and continental breakfast (CP). Participation is unlimited. Some walking is involved, comfortable shoes & suitable clothing recommended as well as a sweater for the way back and bring money for extras. This tour operates daily. Pick up in each hotel between 7:20am and 8:00am. Leave Cancun 8:20am. Pick up is also available for the Riviera Maya hotels. Drop off is approximately at 7:00pm. ISLA MUJERES $89 PP The charming island 4.3 miles (7 km) long and .6 miles (1 km) wide, is located 6 miles (10 km) northeast of Cancun. It was discovered by the Spanish navigators in 1517 who christened it with this name upon finding a great deal of ceramic figurines from pre-Hispanic times which depicted female's figures. The island has been blessed by nature with perfect beauty; crystal clear waters with changing hues, smooth sand ideal climate. There are also remnants of Mayan civilization, structures built by pirates, and the most modern hotels. Handicrafts available are basically made from pink seashells. The typical dish is called Tikin-Chik roast fish. JUNGLE TOUR $66 PP Enjoy this exciting, 2-1/2 hour tour across the Nichupte Lagoon and The Mangrove Forest. Get to drive your own two person speed boat and head for the open ocean to Punta Nizuc section of one of the longest coral reefs in the world, where we stop for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing before heading back to the marina. Transport: Speed boats 2 seats. This tour will last 2-1/2 hours. Meals: Only refreshments. Participation is unlimited. You and your companion drive one boat sharing, if you want one for yourself you pay double the price. Departs daily from the marina at: 8am-10:30am, 9am-11:30am, 12pm-2:30pm, and 3pm-5:30pm. The pick up is not included. The people have to be at the marina 30 minutes prior to departure. This tour includes drive your own speed boat for 2 people, Snorkeling equipment and refreshments. SWIM WITH DOLPHINS $149 PP There are 2 spots for this activity. One in Isla Mujeres and one in Puerto Aventuras. The one in Puerto Aventuras includes ground transportation (from hotel lobby to Dolphin Center). The one in Isla Mujeres does not include ground transportation from the hotel to the pier, but it includes roundtrip boat transfers (ferry) from the pier to the Dolphin Center located in Isla Mujeres. The American Express representative will reserve the activity at the best location according to the hotel the guests are staying at. For hotels in Cancun, as well as the Moon Palace, the best place will be Isla Mujeres. For hotels in the areas of Puerto Morelos, Riviera Maya and Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, Xpu-Ha and Tulum, the closest and most convenient is Puerto Aventuras. The swim program is 1 hour long and is divided into 2 parts. Guests begin with a 30 minute orientation seminar during which they will watch an educational video to learn some of the more interesting facts about Dolphins, followed by specific instructions from the training staff on what they will be doing when they swim with the dolphins. Following the orientation, the trainers will take the guests dockside for a 30 minute "experience of a life time". Guests will enjoy the thrill of gently rubbing the dolphins' skin as they swim next to these creatures. They will be amazed at the dolphin power and grace as they push them through the water by their feet or jump over them. A portion of the water time will also be dedicated to the "free time" portion of the swim where guests will interact more spontaneously with the dolphins allowing everyone very personal contact. Do not miss the experience of a lifetime! This tour will last 1 hour. Meals: None. Participation is limited to 8 passengers per group, per swim. Wear your bathing suit under your clothes. No suntan lotion allowed. Bring an extra t-shirt to protect yourself while swimming. Bring money for extra activities. No children under 8 years old in this program. Children 8-12 years old can participate if accompanied by a responsible adult. Pregnant women can not participate in this program. Anyone with a physical or mental handicap needs to check with us before reservation. Cancellations must be done 24 hours prior to scheduled swim in order to get a full refund. Schedule: 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, and 4:00pm. This tour includes a 1 hour program (30 minutes of water time) that allows visitors to perform various activities with the dolphins including the foot push, interaction, dolphin kiss and free time. This tour does not include optional photographs and video. Transfers from hotel to dock if dolphin program is in Isla Mujeres. This tour operates daily including Sundays. Cancellations less than 24 hours in advance will incur a 100% penalty. Changes less than 24 hours in advance will incur a 100% penalty.

TULUM $139 PP The civilization created by the ancient Maya has long since disappeared, but traces of it still remain at their more than 3000 ancient cities. Their language is still spoken by the modern day Maya in the peninsula. Their extraordinary mathematical and astrological calculations included devising a calendar more accurate than the one we use today and pioneering the concept of zero in mathematics. Tulum is an imposing walled city on the coast that dates from the Classic period (250-900 AD). The ceremonial and political center of the city was surrounded by a wall, while the common people settle on the perimeter. A wonderful inlet named Xel-Ha has the most spectacular natural aquarium of the world for you to experience a real aquatic adventure. Explore this magical theme park created by the Mayan Gods. Enjoy adventure activities, natural ecological attractions. The additional activities at extra cost not included in price: Swim with Dolphins and diving. XCARET $116 PP Sacred Paradise of nature, it was for more than a millennium, one of the most important Mayan ceremonial centers and ports. Five centuries ago, the Eco-archeological Park of Xcaret was known as the ancient Mayan pole. Strategically located on the coast amid dense jungles of Yucatan peninsula, this city was one of the principal centers of marine commerce and trade in the Caribbean region. Not only was the pole an important place of business, it was also considered a special area where pilgrims came to cleanse and bathe themselves in its sacred waters before crossing in canoes to the island of Cozumel, where they would pay homage to Ixchel, the Mayan Goddess of fertility. Enjoy the Caribbean Sea swimming on the beach, lagoons, ponds, canals and sacrificial wells. In the cave, snorkel among color- ful fish and explore archeological sites. Visit the Botanical Garden and the Nursery, Butterfly Pavilion, Tropical Aquarium as well as the wild bird hatchery and the Maya town.
